Miri Mara Ceramics

While I was in Montecito last weekend, designer Kendall Conrad was insistent that I visit Miri Mara Ceramics. After seeing the unique shapes, textures, and colors of their pieces, I can see why.  Owner Fatmir “Miri” Mara was a fashion designer in Milan for almost 20 years before he and his husband decided to retire to Santa Barbara. A documentary about Japanese pottery led to a class and the rest as they say is history.

Miri was unfortunately traveling in Italy at the time of my visit but his trusty artist assistant Zach Zarker was on hand to give us a tour of the showroom and studio in Carpinteria. Each piece is hand made and takes 4-5 to produce so it really is like a couture process. C magazine has a video of Miri in the studio that highlights their process. I especially love to snakeskin texture and Brancusi looking vases. Kendall loves them so much she’s having cups and other special pieces made for her Venice, California store. The Miri Mara website is not up and running yet but you can stop by the showroom or call them to place an order.
